On Tuesday, Meta introduced its first standalone AI assistant app, Meta AI, signaling a major advancement in the company’s broader AI ambitions. Unveiled during the debut LlamaCon developer conference, the app runs on Meta’s most advanced large language model to date—Llama 4—and is built to deliver a more personalized, conversational, and socially integrated AI experience. The app is now available for free on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for Android and iOS users.
To access the app’s full range of features, users are required to sign in, with the option to easily create an account using Instagram credentials. Unlike competitors such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, Meta AI currently does not offer a paid subscription tier.
While Meta AI has previously been integrated into platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, this new app provides a dedicated space for direct interaction with Meta’s AI assistant. It supports both text and voice inputs, enables image generation, and includes web search functionality.
The app also supports integration with Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, offering a seamless way to continue conversations between devices. A Discover tab showcases trending AI-generated content—images, prompts, and animations—mirroring the social sharing experience of Instagram but focused specifically on creative AI outputs.
Users can revisit previous interactions through the History tab, which stores all past generative searches and conversations. Meta AI also uses data from a user’s Facebook and Instagram activity to deliver more personalized responses, learning preferences and drawing on contextual clues to make interactions feel more relevant and human-like.
A standout feature is the full-duplex voice mode, enabling real-time, natural-sounding conversations with the AI. Though currently limited to select regions, this capability is designed to move voice interactions closer to the fluidity of speaking with another person.
The release of the Meta AI app highlights Meta’s continued push into the AI space, aiming to create more personalized, socially aware, and accessible digital tools. As the app evolves, users can expect new features that further blur the lines between AI and everyday communication.
