WhatsApp has introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI)-driven feature that summarizes unread personal chats, aimed at helping users quickly catch up on missed conversations. Designed for those constantly on the move or overwhelmed by numerous messages, this feature uses Meta AI to generate concise, bulleted recaps of unread chats with just a tap of the unread messages button.
Currently being rolled out in the United States, WhatsApp plans to expand the feature to more regions and languages later this year.
“We’re excited to introduce Message Summaries, a new option that uses Meta AI to privately and quickly summarise unread messages in a chat, so you can get an idea of what is happening, before reading the details in your unread messages,” WhatsApp said in its official release.
How It Works:
- Meta AI uses Private Processing Technology to generate responses securely.
- Neither Meta nor WhatsApp can access users’ messages or the generated summaries.
- The message summary feature is optional and turned off by default.
- Users have the choice to enable or disable this feature as needed.
- Advanced Chat Privacy settings let users decide which chats can be used with AI features.
Over the past year, Meta has added multiple AI-powered features to WhatsApp, such as the ability to ask Meta AI questions directly in a chat and generate images in real time.
What is Private Processing Technology?
Private Processing Technology is a secure computing infrastructure designed to enable users to instruct AI to handle tasks like summarizing unread WhatsApp messages or offering writing suggestions
As per Meta, Private Processing creates a “secure cloud environment where AI models can analyse and process data without exposing it to unauthorised parties”.
WhatsApp Introduces Ads
Earlier this month, WhatsApp revealed plans to introduce advertisements within the app’s Updates tab. Similar to Instagram, users will start seeing ads after viewing a few status stories. These ads will be tailored using user data such as location (country/city), language, and followed channels.
In addition to ad placements, WhatsApp will also generate revenue through Channel subscriptions and promotions. According to the company, these subscription fees will be processed via app stores.
